FLEXIBLE PCB DESIGN manufacturing
Just like a city planner carefully designs roads and lanes, PCB designers use solder masks to plan and protect the pathways (traces) of their circuits. A solder mask insulates and protects the copper traces from unintended electrical connections, or shorts, during the reflow process of soldering.
Once a PCB is fabricated and populated with components, the traces must be routed in order to connect all of the different pieces of the circuit board together. The routing process is a critical step and requires precision. It is important to ensure that the traces are aligned with all of the components and that there are no gaps or open areas between any two traces. In addition, the traces should be routed with sufficient width to prevent solder bridging and to allow for future troubleshooting.
Before a flexible pcb design can be routed and soldered, it must be cleaned to remove any contaminants. This is done using a solvent in an automated degreasing machine or manually with degreasing chemicals. The surface must also be etched in order to create a flat, smooth, and even surface to work on. Once the copper surface is clean, it is ready to be coated with solder mask.

What role do solder masks play in FLEXIBLE PCB DESIGN manufacturing?
Solder masks come in many colors and are applied in several ways. The most common method is to silk screen a liquid epoxy onto the surface of the printed circuit board. This is the lowest cost solder mask option and it can be made in any color you want. It can also be colored with dye that is mixed into the epoxy liquid before it is silk-screened.
Stencil printing is a more expensive option for creating a solder mask. This is typically used when the PCB will be a rigid flex board or has additional manufacturing requirements. It can be created with either washable or peelable mask material. Washable mask allows the stencil to be washed during or after production. Peelable mask requires that the cured layer be removed and is less reliable for rigid flex boards.
When choosing a solder mask color, it is essential to consider how the mask will be etched and how it will be removed once it has cured. This will help determine the thickness of the resulting etch and the resolution of the mask. A lower etch depth and higher resolution will produce a clearer image of the conductive traces, making them easier to read and maintain.
A quality solder mask should be resistant to both thermal cycling and the rigors of manufacturing. It should also be able to resist oxidation and corrosion. It should also have good adhesion to the underlying copper. It should not be brittle and it should be easy to apply. It should also have good resistance to moisture, condensation, and cleaning chemical exposure during operation.
